All great things to keep consistent and to double-check before publishing any documents. That's why I love style guides! I live by them now! My biggest pet-peeve when it comes to print is (wait for it) mispelled words. That turns me into Head Editor mode faster than you can blink! I often have to apologize to family members for editing their emails and letters. "Occupational hazard," I tell them. :-)

It's not necessarily a newsletter or book, but one site I use a lot when I have random grammar issues/need to prove to someone why I'm not lying to them that x grammar rule applies is the Purdue Online Writing Lab. A professor at Clemson recommended it when I was a student there and it's really beneficial.

Another Tip: Bring your own cup/mug to work. You can avoid creating extra trash if you don't have to use the disposable cups by the coffee pot or water cooler.

Sarah
I'm delighted you managed to get approval to attend this year's STC Summit.

If you've never attended an STC conference before I'd recommend the First Timers session on Sunday.
Also, your company obviously wants to get the best return on their investment in your attendance, so sit down with your supervisor and go through the conference program together, picking those sessions that will feed directly into your employers needs.

Don't forget to include a session or two that will interest and inspire you!

Also remember that every attendee gets access to the post-conference recorded version of the sessions (Conference@aClick), so you can share those with your colleagues too.
That's a huge benefit to your employer!

I look forward to seeing you in Atlanta, Sarah.
Cheers
Mark Clifford

Great post Jen! I too benefited from "mentors," although I am not sure I really ever classified them that way until now. And STC was a huge factor in my development when I finished school and moved to the area. All of my co-workers at my first job were members of STC and encouraged me to get involved (and answered all of my "newbie" questions along the way!). I think that is one of the great things about the people I have encountered in this field--we help each other out, no matter how "small" the dilemma.
