Member Spotlight: David Orr

January 20, 2010 by LaTasha

Technical communicators by day. Passionate and goal-driven by night. Our members are always busy straddling two careers. It’s no secret that many of us have a barely finished manuscript somewhere hidden around the house. (Or am I seriously projecting here?) If we were to hold a meeting to share and discuss our side jobs, dreams, and projects; the turnout would probably be tremendous, and we’d all experience great surprise.

So in the spirit of great surprise, tremendousness, and all things positive and uplifting, I recently reached out to our fellow member David Orr to discuss his current day job and the passion that keeps him awake toiling upward in the night.

STC:  How long have you been a member of STC?

David:

I joined the Chicago STC Chapter in 1983 when I first became a free-lance technical writing consultant. We moved near Asheville, N.C., in 2005 to be in the Blue Ridge Mountains and escape Chicago winters. Good decision!

STC:  What are you currently working on in terms of tech communication?

David:

I just finished an online training project developed in Articulate for a big insurance company.

STC:  How has STC helped shape your career?

David:

During the first several years STC meetings provided contacts that helped me get started first in a free-lance contracting career, and then in a technical writing and training business, through which I was able to hire other STC members.

Also, many current friends came through STC contacts.  The organization gave me the chance to share knowledge of our craft both as a speaker and listener. Finally, knowledge and contacts through  STC helped me make the transition to instructional design as my primary focus.

STC:  You’re working on a book, Dragging in God By His Left Hind Foot. Is this your first book? Have you always wanted to write a book?

David:

Thanks for mentioning the book. I haven’t always wanted to write a book, but it is time to write this one, and, yes, it is my first. I grew up in the Old South (Columbia, S.C.) in the Fifties and early Sixties. A friend in college at USC once said that “Southerners are always dragging God into conversations by His left hind foot.” I shamelessly adapted his comment into the title of my book. It’s a spiritual autobiography in the form of a miscellany of stories, poems, and essays, all with a definite Southern accent, and with influences from a lifetime of living outside the South. The book should be out by February. Write dorr20@charter.net to get on my mailing list.

STC:  How has your writing career as a technical communicator influenced the writing of this book?

David:

Tech writing has honed my style to be clear and concise. Knowledge of the writing, editing and publishing process have played a role too. Finally, I’ve built stamina and the expectation that this writing would take a lot of time and effort.
